Rochester Carburetor Numbers

The Rochester Carburetor number is stamped into the body or a tag that's attached to the carb. Identification can be challenging for the Rochesters that had the tags fixed to the body. Sometimes the tag would be removed or torn off. When that's happened you'll need to know the exact shape of the throttle linkage you'll need for your application.

The Rochester Quarda-Jet 4 barrel carburetor has the identification number stamped vertically on the throttle lever side of the body itself. Carter had also built a virtually identical unit when Rochester wasn't able to keep up to production. The Carter Carburetors can be identified by an aluminum sheet metal disc fastened to the driver's side of the carburetor body. Date codes are stamped into the base of the carburetor on the throttle lever side by the back bolt hole.

Rochester Date Codes

A four-digit date code identifies both the day and the year the carburetor was manufactured. For example (.043 would be the 43 day, 251 would be the 251 st day of the year. The fourth number is the last digit of the assembly year. An 8 would be 1968 or 1978. Year codes do not specify what decade the carb was assembled in. For that, you must use the identification number and other features of the carburetor.
Early Quadra-jets used a 7 digit identification number the began with a 70. Starting in 1976 a 1 was inserted in front of Chevrolet I.D. numbers creating an 8 digit number making it very easy to know if your carb was 76 and newer or 75 and older.
By far the most common carburetor put on small and big block Chevrolet engines is the Quadrajet. Built by both Rochester and Carter with the former being the most common. Rochester Quadrajets have an identification number stamped vertically into the drivers' side of the main body. The Crater Quadrajet has a small aluminum sheet metal disc pressed into its drivers' side with the identification number.
The 2 barrel Rochesters and the old-style 4 jet can be identified by decoding the small metal tag that attaches to the body of the carburetor with a screw.
The Rochester 4 jet 4 barrel Carburetor was used from 1955 to 1966, mostly on cars with automatic transmissions. They were replaced with the Quadrajet in 1967.
