Your Signal Lights

Ya know,it never ceases to amaze me how many people think that signal lights or turn indicators as they are now reffered to more and more are an optional device. These lights are installed on your vehicle to tell other drivers around that you plan on either leaving that particular road or you plan on moving into traffic. Personally,I find it annoying that we as motorists are using these factory installed items less and less. On the other hand there are times when I've even pulled over on Crowchild Trail or Glenmore and double checked to make sure mine were working simply because it seamed to me that no one was seeing them.

When I used to drive big trucks hauling cattle, most of us did whats called a three flash special,we turned our signal light on for three flashes and we were coming over whether there was someone there or not. People wake up and start paying attention after that believe me. When you see a truck and trailer 75 feet long coming into your lane, you find another place to be when they're going to dis-place your vehicle. I've evn noticed that my attention has a lapse at times. Whether this is due to having a lot on my mind or it just wandering. This is a clear indicator that you should find a safe place to pull over and take a few minutes to yourself, clear your mind and relax. Let the other people on the road do what they do. Its up to you to control what you do and how you react to the road and its conditions.

Common sense is a myth, that statement in itself suggests that we all hade the same teacher giving us all the same instruction. See where this is going? When we drive, all of us have different habits and ways we deal with stresses of the road. We all have different levels of skill and experience behind the wheel. Let me be clear, there is NO substitute for experience. I can look back and say with full confidence I would handle different driving conditions with different reactions certain times of my life. Sending your teenager to a driving school or enrolling them in a course through their high school is one of the smartest things you could do for them. Sure it may cost a few bucks its still cheaper than what an accident would cost due to not having the driving skills. One of the first things you could suggest to your kid it to ask them to pay attention to how you do things behind the wheel, you may be suprised to note just how many bad habits you have. Think about that when your are passing down your experience to your child.
